![]() Since it doesn’t appear that Arika will be working on an FEXL follow-up anytime soon, the second best option at their disposal would be to have their characters represented in Tekken 8. It wasn’t the most successful fighting game around, but Arika supported it well and it kept them in business. They weren’t able to capitalize on this until the development of Fighting EX Layer, a game announced on April Fools’ Day, which featured a bunch of non-Capcom SFEX characters. Some fighting game development team members remained at the company during that time, though, shown through the “Fighting Sample” tech demo for 3DS that featured Hokuto, Kairi, Blair Dame, and Shadowgeist from the SFEX titles. It had been a while since Arika worked on a new fighting game at the time it released in 2012, precisely since Street Fighter EX 3 back in 2000 as a PlayStation 2 launch title. It’s understandable why this opportunity wasn’t capitalized on with Prime Edition. It would be one of the biggest missed opportunities in recent fighting game history if this doesn’t include Fighting Layer and Fighting EX Layer characters, the latter of whom originated from Street Fighter EX, as guests. Arika unfortunately didn’t have the opportunity to add much of their unique content to the game outside of a collectible card system, but Bandai Namco should offer them that for Tekken 8. ![]() The studio previously worked on Tekken 3D: Prime Edition, a largely faithful port of Tekken 6 for 3DS with predictable compromises from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. This isn’t the first time Arika is working with the Tekken franchise. The collaboration shouldn’t stop at Arika providing mere assistance, however. The small development studio is working with the Tekken team for Tekken 8’s production alongside future updates for Tekken 7, the latter of which should involve nothing more than balance upgrades now that new content development has been shifted to the upcoming game. One of the biggest tidbits, however, involves the development help: Arika. Bandai Namco is starting to detail Tekken 8’s gameplay feature set, including added and altered mechanics and even a returning character.
